The internet is a huge cauldron that many millions of people use each day. At any one point of time, there are millions of people who are part of this system. The system is mainly used for searching various products and as part of the e-commerce system it is used by many people to buy and sell products over the internet. Amazon is one of the biggest companies that are involved in selling various products. These products are bought by other people through the internet by paying through their credit cards or through their bank accounts.
Since people buy and sell through the internet, the details of the people who buy and sell are not always very important in the transaction. There are also no proper tax laws that have been framed by the governments because of the lack of tracking mechanisms that are present to track the sales on the internet. Another feature of the transactions and business deals on the internet is that it involves people from different countries and this prevents the tax laws in one country from being applied to a person in another country.
In this scenario, it has been seen that North Carolina’s tax offices have been asking Amazon.com to part with the details of all the buyers from the state who purchased any product on the site in the last few years. The tax collectors are asking for information including personal details and also detailed information on what was purchased by these people.
Amazon is fighting against this because it is a privacy violation of the citizens disclosing about what they purchased from the online website. There are various tax implications because of the online sales of the products that do not have sales tax as such. North Carolina residents have been singled out because of the tax collectors of the state.
