According to two market research firms NPD and Gartner, Android phone sales have exceeded those of Apple’s iPhone in the US however it is not the case worldwide. Android’s market share in North America during the first quarter of this year reached 28% while that of iPhone just followed at 21%. A major reason for Android’s lead this time was because of the introduction of the Droid both by Motorola and HTC at Verizon.

Apple disputed the results of the research firm since worldwide sales of the iPhone was not highlighted stating that the 150k respondents online cannot represent the whole community of Smartphone users.

iPhone still takes the top spot worldwide due to the popularity of the iPhone in the Asian and European continents. According to Apple’s Tim Cook, iPhone sales in Asia Pacific region increased 474% year on year. iPhone Sales in Europe grew by 133%.

The latest report from Gartner shows Nokia still taking the top spot with a 39.3% share, followed by RIM with a slightly lower share of 19.4% from 20.9% the previous year. Apple more than doubles its sales gaining a share of 15.4%, an increase from the past period’s 10.5%. Android’s share followed iPhone with a 9.6% share. However Android showed a dramatic increase in market share coming from a mere 1.6% first quarter of 2009.

Noting from the figures above, Apple actually ate up some share from Blackberry, but in spite of that, it is still behind Google in more than one way. Google’s dramatic growth is something which must worry Apple especially with the launch of the Froyo, the recent version of Android and some popular feature like converting your Smartphone into a hotspot. Although the iPhone was a ground-breaking gadget Froyo’s innovative capabilities will set a new trend in the future of the Smartphone industry.

Apple has to do something more innovative lest it gets left behind by Google. IT Support
